London Favorites :: Day Trips

Welcome back to my “London Favorites” series! If you didn’t see the first two posts you can click here for the first and here for the second. I actually bumped this topic forward on the list because recently I’ve gotten so many requests for day trips.

I’m going to share mainly the ones we have actually done, but I’ll also let you guys in on my list that we probably won’t completely cover before we move back in June.

{ONE} Bath

Bath blew me away, y’all. The Roman baths and ruins are so neat. The town was really cute too and we had the best meal at Sally Lunns (I still dream about those bunns!). It is so easy and cheap to get there by train from London and you don’t need a car in the town, it’s easy to walk everywhere.

{TWO} Whitstable

We went to this seaside town for their annual oyster festival (this year July 27-29) and it was SO much fun! There is a little area with shops and restaurants by the boats. Then there are pebbly beaches, and finally, there’s a long walk along the coast with little huts you can rent for the day (see below). I’m not sure what it’s like when the festival isn’t going on, but it was such a great day trip with friends!

{THREE} Sussex – The Griffin Inn

We went to Sussex for a weekend and I would definitely recommend staying a night in The Griffin Inn pub even though that’s more than just a day trip. How neat is it to say you got to sleep in a pub for a night?! Not to mention, the food is Michelin-star recognized and absolutely divine. I had the mussels twice while we were there. If you want to see the English countryside, but can’t rent a car to get out to the Cotswolds, this is an awesome alternative and easy to get to by train from London.

{FOUR} Oxford

We went to Oxford on our way to the Cotswolds so while we did it in a day, we continued on to the Northern Cotswolds. I have to say that I really enjoyed walking around the magnificent university.

The next two are ones that I’ve written full blog posts for, so head to the links to check these out! Even if you’re not the biggest Harry Potter fan, I recommend the Studios, they were so neat! Also, Windsor is incredibly easy to get to and the castle is magnificent.

  • Windsor – See my full post on this here! We also just got back from seeing Megan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding outfits which was a fun exhibit to see. See if you’ll be here when they’re on display!

  • Harry Potter Studios – Full review and tons of photos here!

Let me also add, because I get this question all of the time, I would NOT recommend Paris for a day trip! The Eurostar makes it tempting because you can be to Paris in two hours, but you guys, you’re still going to a new country. That means you’ll still have to be to the train station early to get through passport control, etc. Not to mention, Paris is spectacular and you should go when you can sit for two hours at a cafe and just people watch. See my France posts here.

There are two day trips that are still high on our list. The first is Stonehenge which you need a car for, or need to take a tour bus. The second is the Jurassic Coast which is a World Heritage Site south of London and is a coastline full of fossils and beautiful cliffs.

Other England trips, but that we want to spend a little more time at are Brighton, Devon, and Cornwall! We, of course, wish we could make it up north to see the Lake District, but goodness you guys we are just slap running out of time. All the more reason to come back :).

All of my London posts are here too if you want more. Also, remember you can read up on any of our trips under the Travel section on my blog or in my Instagram Highlights.
